Word & Character Counter
Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs instantly. Check reading time and a custom text limit while you type.
Paste or type your text
Your text stays in this browser. The tool does not upload it or save it in browser storage.
How to use the word and character counter
- Type directly into the text box or paste an existing draft.
- Read the live totals for words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines.
- Select a word or character limit when an application, assignment or platform specifies one.
- Adjust reading speed if you need a rough reading-time estimate.
- Copy the revised text or download it as a plain-text file before leaving the page.
The tool counts as you type, so there is no submit button. Characters include letters, numbers, punctuation, symbols, spaces and line breaks. “Without spaces” removes all whitespace characters, including spaces, tabs and new lines.
How the counts are estimated
Word boundaries can differ between languages and software. This counter uses the browser’s language-aware word segmentation when available, with a Unicode-aware fallback for letters and numbers. Hyphenated or apostrophe-connected terms are normally treated as one word by the fallback.
A sentence is estimated from groups ending in a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or the Hindi danda “।” symbol. Headings and list items without ending punctuation may not count as sentences. Paragraphs are non-empty blocks separated by one or more blank lines.
Reading time divides the word total by the selected reading speed. Speaking time uses an approximate rate of 130 words per minute. These are planning estimates: technical vocabulary, pauses, pronunciation and audience interaction can change the real time.
Useful checks before submitting text
- Confirm whether the stated limit counts spaces. Different forms use different character rules.
- Check if headings, references, captions or footnotes are included in an assignment word limit.
- Do not rely on word count alone for writing quality; review accuracy, structure and citations.
- Keep another copy of important work. This page deliberately does not save your draft.
- Use the final platform’s counter when its rules determine acceptance.
Frequently asked questions
Does the character count include spaces?
The Characters total includes spaces and line breaks. The Without spaces total removes all whitespace.
How are words counted?
The tool uses language-aware browser segmentation where available and a Unicode-aware fallback. Results may differ slightly from another editor’s rules.
Is the reading time exact?
No. It is the word count divided by your selected reading speed. Actual reading time depends on the reader and the difficulty of the text.
Will the tool cut text that exceeds my limit?
No. It only reports the amount used, remaining or over the selected limit. Your text is not changed automatically.
Is my text uploaded or saved?
No. Counting happens in your browser. OpenStudyInfo does not receive or store the text entered here.
