UK CAS delayed? Check the cause before you panic
A delayed Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) does not automatically mean that your admission or visa will be refused. In most cases, the university is still waiting for a condition, checking documents or completing its own immigration-compliance review.
Fast answer
UK CAS Letter 2026 at a Glance
Many students call it a “CAS letter”, but the CAS is normally an electronic record created by a licensed student sponsor. Your university sends you a CAS reference and the information used to create it. You use that reference when completing the UK Student visa application.
The basics
What Is a CAS and Why Is It Important?
CAS stands for Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. It confirms that a licensed UK university or college is sponsoring you for a particular course. According to the official Student visa rules, the CAS reference must come from your education provider and you must apply for the visa within six months of receiving it.
An offer confirms that the university is willing to admit you. A CAS is issued later, after the university is satisfied that its academic, financial, identity and immigration checks have been completed.
Realistic timeline
CAS Letter Processing Time in 2026
There is no universal CAS letter processing time. Some universities publish an estimate of around 5 working days, while others quote around 10 working days after a complete request. Your timer may not begin until the deposit has cleared and every requested document has been approved.
| Application stage | What it usually means | Your next step |
|---|---|---|
| Not ready | An offer condition, deposit or document is still outstanding. | Open the applicant portal and complete the missing item. |
| Complete | The university can begin its CAS and compliance checks. | Count only the university’s stated working days. |
| Extra checks | Finance, immigration history, previous study or credibility checks are continuing. | Reply quickly and upload exactly what was requested. |
| Overdue | The published service time has passed with no update. | Send one clear follow-up with your applicant ID and deadline. |
Processing can take longer before the September and January intakes because thousands of students submit documents at the same time. Weekends, UK bank holidays and repeated incomplete uploads can add further delay.

CAS Delay Checker: Is Your File Actually Complete?
Before emailing the university, check all six points below. A green tick in your own records is more useful than sending repeated “please issue CAS” messages.
Offer conditions
All academic and English-language conditions show as satisfied.
Deposit received
The payment is visible in the university portal, not merely debited by your bank.
Passport details
Name, date of birth and passport number match every document.
Financial evidence
Funds and statement dates meet the current Student visa rules if evidence is requested.
Immigration history
Previous visas, refusals and UK study history have been declared correctly.
Extra requirements
Pre-CAS interview, ATAS, TB certificate or consent forms are complete where applicable.
Most common causes
Why Is My UK CAS Letter Delayed?
Missing or unclear documents
A blurred passport, incomplete marksheet, untranslated document or mismatched name can stop the review.
Deposit not reconciled
An international payment may leave your bank before the university finance team assigns it to your student account.
Financial evidence check
The amount, 28-day holding period, account ownership or bank-document format may need clarification.
Immigration-history review
Previous UK study, visa refusals, course changes or academic progression can require a manual compliance check.
Pre-CAS credibility interview
The university may want to confirm your course choice, funding plan and genuine intention to study.
High application volume
A complete file can still wait in a queue during the busiest weeks before a major intake.
For Indian applicants
Is There a Separate Tamil Nadu UK CAS Issue?
No separate CAS rule applies only to students from Tamil Nadu. UK Student route requirements are set nationally, and the CAS is issued by the sponsoring university—not by a Tamil Nadu authority. A delay affecting an applicant from Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai or elsewhere should therefore be checked against the same university checklist.
What may look like a “Tamil Nadu UK CAS issue” is often an individual document or verification issue: a bank statement that needs confirmation, a payment still being matched, an untranslated document, a name variation across records, or an outstanding requirement such as a TB certificate or ATAS approval where applicable.
Ask the university to identify the exact outstanding item in writing. Do not rely on rumours that a whole state, bank or intake has been blocked unless the university or an official UK source confirms it.
Action plan
What to Do If Your CAS Is Delayed
-
1
Check the portal first
Look for an unsatisfied condition, unread message, payment status or document marked “rejected”, “pending” or “resubmit”.
-
2
Read your university’s CAS timeframe
Do not compare your case with another university. Note the date on which your own file became complete and count working days from there.
-
3
Send one complete follow-up
Include your full name, applicant ID, course, intake, payment date, date all conditions were met and any visa or enrolment deadline.
-
4
Escalate through the official channel
If the published service time has passed, use the university’s international admissions or visa-compliance contact—not unofficial agents or social-media comments.
-
5
Protect your intake
If time is short, ask for the latest permitted arrival date and whether remote enrolment or deferral is possible. Do not book non-refundable travel before your visa is granted.

Send accurate dates and attach proof only if the university permits attachments. Avoid sending the same email every day, as duplicate tickets may slow down the response.
Do not confuse them
CAS Delay vs CAS Refusal
| Situation | What it means | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| CAS delayed | The review is incomplete or the file is waiting in a queue. | Find the pending item, follow the university timeframe and request an update. |
| CAS declined by university | The sponsor has decided not to issue a CAS after its assessment. | Ask for the reason and any internal review or deferral options. |
| Visa refused | UK Visas and Immigration has refused an application submitted with a CAS. | Read the refusal notice and obtain regulated immigration advice where needed. A CAS cannot simply be reused after a refusal. |
Current official figures
Financial Requirements That Can Affect CAS Checks
Your university may review financial evidence before issuing a CAS even when UKVI does not ask every applicant to upload it at the start of the visa application. Under the current Student route, the amount normally includes the outstanding course fee shown on the CAS plus living costs for up to nine months.
- Where financial evidence is required, the money normally needs to be held for 28 consecutive days.
- The end of that 28-day period must usually be no more than 31 days before the visa application date.
- Money already paid to the university can reduce the amount you need to show only when it is correctly recorded and permitted under the rules.
- Use the latest official guidance because exchange rates, evidence rules and maintenance amounts can change.
Plan backwards
How a CAS Delay Affects the Visa Timeline
If you are applying from outside the UK, you can normally apply for a Student visa up to six months before your course starts. If you are applying from inside the UK, the window is normally up to three months before the course starts, subject to the switching and timing rules.
These are standard decision targets, not guarantees. Identity checks, document verification, an interview or a request for more information can increase the time.
Special case
Combined CAS and Pre-Sessional English Courses
A university may issue one combined CAS for a pre-sessional English course and the main degree only when its sponsorship policy and your offer conditions allow it. In other cases, the university may issue separate CAS records. The decision belongs to the sponsor, so confirm the arrangement directly before applying for your visa.
Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a UK CAS letter take in 2026?
There is no universal processing time. Published university examples range from about 5 to 10 working days after a complete request, but peak-season queues and additional checks can make it longer. Use the service time published by your own university.
Why is my CAS taking longer than another student’s?
Two applications can require different checks. Payment matching, document quality, immigration history, previous UK study, finance evidence, ATAS or a pre-CAS interview may affect one file but not the other.
Is there a special Tamil Nadu UK CAS issue?
No separate CAS rule applies only to Tamil Nadu. Ask the university which specific document or compliance check is pending and rely on written official information rather than regional rumours.
Can I apply for a Student visa without a CAS?
No. A valid CAS reference from a licensed student sponsor is required for the Student visa application.
Should I email the university every day?
No. First wait for the university’s published service time. If it has passed, send one complete message with your applicant ID, course, completion dates and relevant deadline.
Can a CAS be used twice?
A CAS is intended for one visa application. Under the Immigration Rules it cannot be reused after an application made with it has been granted or refused.
Does a CAS guarantee a UK Student visa?
No. It confirms sponsorship for the course, but UKVI still assesses all applicable identity, finance, English-language, suitability and immigration requirements.
What if the CAS arrives close to my course start date?
Ask the university for its latest permitted arrival date and whether deferral or another enrolment arrangement is available. Submit a visa application only when you meet the rules and have checked all CAS details.
