What Are Passing Marks in IGNOU?

Passing marks are the minimum score required for a course component to meet its applicable requirement. IGNOU can evaluate learners through assignments, Term-End Examinations, practicals, projects, dissertations and other programme-specific components.

The exact rule can depend on your programme and course. That is why this checker does not impose one fixed minimum on every student. You enter the rule applicable to your own component.

How the Calculation Works

Percentage = Obtained Marks ÷ Maximum Marks × 100
Required Marks = Maximum Marks × Minimum Percentage ÷ 100
Example 1

40 marks out of 100 equals 40%. Whether it meets the requirement depends on the minimum threshold selected.

Example 2

24 marks out of 60 also equals 40%. Different totals can produce the same percentage.

Assignment, TEE and Other Components

Assignment marks

Check the exact course code, assignment marks, submission status, grade-card entry and rule mentioned in your programme guide. A missing entry and a score below the required minimum are different situations.

Term-End Examination marks

TEE marks and assignment marks are separate entries. Meeting the threshold in one component does not automatically confirm completion of the whole course when other components are required.

Practical, project and dissertation marks

Programmes with practical, project, field-work or dissertation requirements may have separate evaluation rules. Use the component-specific minimum stated in the official programme material.

What Does “Not Completed” Mean?

“Not Completed” on a grade card does not always mean the student has failed. It can appear when:

  • One or more component marks have not been updated.
  • A required practical, project or assignment entry is missing.
  • The selected component has not met its applicable threshold.
  • Evaluation or transmission of marks is still pending.

Compare every required component and course code before deciding what action is needed.
