IGNOU Assignment Re-Submission 2026: Failed or Missed Assignment—What to Do?

IGNOU assignment re-submission 2026 guide for failed or missed assignments

Your grade card shows “Not Completed”, or one assignment mark is missing, and you’re wondering whether you must write everything again. Not always. IGNOU assignment re-submission is usually the answer only when an assignment has actually failed or was never submitted. If you submitted with proof and the mark is missing, that alone does not show failure. Ask the centre whether evaluation or marks transmission is pending before preparing another submission. So start by working out which of those three cases is yours, using your course code, grade card and submission receipt.

Do You Actually Need to Submit Your Assignment Again?

The table below shows what to check in each situation. Your programme guide and Study Centre have the final say.

If theory is what failed, our IGNOU backlog examination guide covers the exam side.

IGNOU Assignment Failed: What to Check Before Re-Submission

An assignment has failed when the marks you received fall below your programme’s pass mark, and that mark is not identical everywhere. As one example, the BEDS 101 booklet (Diploma Programme in Value Education, July 2025 and January 2026 sessions) asks for at least 40% in the assignments and in the term-end examination separately, with 30% weightage for assignments and 70% for theory. Treat that as one programme’s rule. Our IGNOU passing marks guide gives wider background, but your own booklet decides your case.

Before preparing anything, confirm three details:

The failed course code.

Look at the course carrying the failing mark. That is where your effort goes.

Your registration.

Make sure it covers the session you plan to submit for.

A valid question paper.

Match the printed validity in the official PDF with your session and the current assignment list.

The same BEDS 101 booklet says a learner without a pass grade has to submit the assignment again. That wording belongs to that programme, so look for the equivalent line in your own booklet. Use that booklet as a programme-specific example, not a universal current submission route or deadline.

Fresh-paper requirements can differ

The BCA_NEW guide requires fresh assignments after failure or non-submission, with valid course registration. Check your own guide before reusing an earlier paper.

Missed the Assignment Deadline?

If the printed deadline has passed, check for an applicable official extension before assuming that you have missed the submission window.

Due dates differ by programme on IGNOU’s assignment list, which carries separate June and December term-end dates. For December 2026, IGNOU’s Student Evaluation Division notified on 1 October 2026 that the last date for assignments (hard and soft copies) for ODL and Online programmes, including GOAL and EVBB, was extended to 31 October 2026, with the approval of the Competent Authority. Read that notice for your own course, and see our assignment deadline guide for the dates in detail. Notices change, so check IGNOU’s announcements page again before relying on any summary, including ours.

If your window has closed, ask your Study Centre, Programme Coordinator or Regional Centre what the next permitted submission is. Nobody can promise late acceptance or another extension. Also ask whether your question paper will still be valid by then. If you did try to submit in time, keep any posting slip or centre acknowledgement, because it helps the centre understand what happened.

Can You Reuse the Old Assignment Paper?

Three different cases get mixed up here.

The same paper is still valid

If the official PDF remains valid for your session, ask whether your programme permits that question set for this attempt.

A new question set is required

If your programme requires a fresh assignment set, download the applicable current paper instead of submitting old questions. You can find IGNOU assignment question papers on our site by programme and course code, although not every course or session may be listed, and IGNOU’s own list remains the authority.

Old answers, new questions

Reusing earlier answers without comparing the questions is the riskiest option. A small change in wording can leave a prepared answer irrelevant.

IGNOU Assignment Re-Submission Process: Seven Steps

Identify the affected course.

Note the course code, the session, and whether it is a fail, a gap or missing marks.

Check registration and programme instructions.

Read your assignment booklet or programme guide for its re-submission wording.

Confirm the valid question paper.

Check the official PDF’s session and your programme’s fresh-assignment requirements.

Confirm the submission route and deadline.

Programmes differ. The BEDS 101 booklet asks for posted copies to its Programme Coordinator, other programmes use Study Centres, and IGNOU’s December 2026 notice mentions soft copies too. Ask your centre rather than assuming one portal.

Prepare original answers and front-page details.

Write fresh answers in your own words and check your enrolment number, programme code, course code and assignment code. Our assignment writing guide and submission checklist help here.

Submit as instructed.

Collect an IGNOU assignment submission receipt or acknowledgement showing the date.

Save proof and follow up.

Keep the receipt and a full copy until the marks and course record are correct.

Marks Not Updated? Check Before Writing Again

IGNOU’s assignment status page says status appears only after the Study Centre or Regional Centre transmits marks following evaluation. A blank entry can therefore mean evaluation or transmission is still pending, which is not a fail. Missing marks can reflect pending evaluation or transmission. Rewriting without checking the cause may create a duplicate submission.

Hypothetical example: Asha submitted two assignments and holds receipts for both. One shows marks and the other is blank. She should first ask the centre about the blank entry and follow its instructions.

Give the centre your enrolment number, programme code, course code, assignment session, the receipt with its date, and a screenshot of the status page or grade card. Start with the Study Centre, then the Regional Centre. IGNOU’s student-services menu also lists a grievance portal, iGRAM. Do not treat a fixed processing period quoted online as a guarantee. Our assignment status not updated guide covers common causes.

Can You Re-Submit a Passed Assignment to Improve Marks?

The BEDS 101 booklet prohibits re-submission for grade improvement after a pass. The BCA_NEW programme guide also states that passed assignments cannot be re-submitted for improvement. Read your applicable guide; do not assume that submitting better answers creates an improvement opportunity. Assignment improvement is separate from theory revaluation, answer-script copies and any theory improvement scheme.

My Advice Before You Submit Again

Treat “Not Completed” as a question, not a verdict. Open your grade card, look at the assignment and theory entries separately, then check the status page and your receipt. Only then decide whether the answer is re-submission, a follow-up with the centre, or a theory re-attempt.

A full assignment takes real effort, while an email with proof takes very little. Confirm the paper is valid for the session you are submitting in, keep every receipt until marks appear, and ask your centre in writing what it expects, so you are not relying on a classmate’s memory of last year’s rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is IGNOU assignment re-submission needed?

It may be needed after assignment failure or a missed submission, according to your programme rules. Missing marks with a receipt require a status check first. Do not automatically submit a passed assignment again.

Can I reuse an older question paper?

Only if the paper remains officially valid and your programme permits it for that attempt. A programme may require fresh assignments after failure or non-submission, so confirm before reusing an older set.

Do I need to submit assignments again if I failed theory?

Not by default. A failed theory paper points to the exam route, not the assignment. If your assignment already shows pass marks, check your programme guide before writing anything new.

What if theory is passed but assignment is failed?

Check the assignment’s passing requirement and re-submission rule. Confirm the course code, valid question paper, registration and authorised submission route before preparing it.

Does “Not Completed” mean my assignment failed?

Not on its own. The label covers the whole course, so it can reflect a failed assignment, a failed theory paper, another pending component or marks not yet updated. Check the assignment and theory entries separately.

Can I improve marks in a passed assignment?

The BEDS 101 booklet and BCA_NEW guide prohibit re-submission of passed assignments for improvement. Check your own programme’s rules instead of assuming that a new submission can replace passed marks.

Is there a universal re-submission fee?

Do not assume a universal fee. If a charge is requested, verify the amount and purpose in current official instructions before paying. Assignment submission and theory exam fees are separate requirements.

What should I do when marks remain missing?

Do not rewrite automatically. Gather your enrolment number, programme and course codes, session and receipt. Contact the Study Centre, then the Regional Centre if needed, and follow the documented instructions.

Your Next Step

Open your grade card and the status page today, and write down which course and which entry is the problem. Then send that course code and your receipt to your Study Centre and ask one clear question: do I need to submit again, and for which paper? Prepare a new assignment only after you have that answer.
