NIOS Marks Calculator: Class 10 and Class 12 Passing Estimate
Use this NIOS Marks Calculator to check whether your examination marks meet the 33% passing rules for Secondary (Class 10) or Senior Secondary (Class 12). Enter your theory and practical marks, confirm the maximum marks for each subject, and read a subject-wise estimate. For a detailed explanation of separate theory, practical and TMA requirements, read our NIOS Class 12 passing marks guide. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere. The result is unofficial, so treat it as a guide and rely on your official NIOS result.
Marks calculator
This is an unofficial estimate based on the marks and maximum marks you entered. Your official NIOS result and applicable assessment rules remain final.
How to use the calculator
- Choose Class 10 or Class 12. The passing checks are different for each.
- For each subject, type the theory marks you obtained and the theory maximum. Take the maximum from your NIOS admit card, marksheet or the current NIOS prospectus.
- If the subject has a practical exam, tick the box and enter practical marks and the practical maximum.
- Press Calculate Result. Use Add Subject for up to seven subjects, Remove to delete one, and Reset to start again.
Leave a field blank if you do not know the mark yet. A blank is treated as missing, not as zero. If you really scored zero, type 0.
How examination percentage is calculated
For each subject, the calculator adds your theory marks and practical marks (if any) and divides by the combined maximum. Multiply by 100 and you have the external examination percentage. For example, 27 out of 80 in theory plus 7 out of 20 in practical gives 34 out of 100, which is 34%.
The pass check uses exact marks, not the rounded percentage. Thirty-three per cent of 80 is 26.4, so 26 marks is below the line and 27 is above it. Displayed percentages are rounded to two decimal places, so a value just under 33% can look like 33.00%. In that case the result card says so, and the pass check still uses the unrounded marks.
This percentage covers external examination marks only. It is not your final NIOS percentage.
Class 10 and Class 12 passing checks
NIOS treats theory and practical as one unit at Secondary level, but checks them separately at Senior Secondary level.
| Check | Class 10 | Class 12 |
|---|---|---|
| 33% of total examination marks | Required | Required |
| 33% of theory marks separately | Not checked | Required |
| 33% of practical marks separately | Not checked | Required, where the subject has practical |
| TMA marks | Excluded | Excluded |
If your subject includes a practical component, use the NIOS practical exam guide to understand the current schedule, centre instructions and preparation requirements.

Worked examples
Example 1: theory 20/80 and practical 20/20. The total is 40 out of 100, or 40%. In Class 10 this meets the aggregate requirement. In Class 12 the theory marks are 25%, which is below the separate 33% requirement, so the calculator does not show a passing estimate.
Example 2: theory 27/80 and practical 7/20. The total is 34 out of 100. Theory is 33.75% and practical is 35%. Both separate checks and the aggregate are met, so the subject meets the checked criteria in either class.
Example 3: a theory-only subject. With 33 out of 100, the subject meets the threshold. With 32 out of 100 it does not.
Why TMA and official final marks are kept separate
Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA) marks are internal assessment. The bye-laws state that the pass criteria apply to examination marks excluding TMA. This calculator therefore never adds TMA to your theory marks and never uses a weighting.
Students looking for question papers and submission guidance can browse the OpenStudyInfo assignment resources and search for NIOS TMA material by subject or course code.
Your marksheet may show a final subject total that already includes other components. If you enter those official totals in the optional section of a subject card, the tool shows a separate figure called “Percentage of the selected final subject marks”. It is simply the sum of the entered finals divided by their maximums. It does not replace the passing checks, and entering it does not change them. Do not enter raw TMA marks there, and do not add TMA on top of a total that already contains it.
Common mistakes
- Guessing maximum marks. Splits such as 80 + 20 or 85 + 15 differ by subject and can change, so confirm them.
- Entering a final subject total in the theory field. This can mix internal assessment with external examination marks and give an incorrect passing estimate.
- Treating a blank as zero, or typing a percentage instead of marks.
- Selecting Class 10 for a Class 12 result. The separate theory and practical checks only apply to Class 12.
- Assuming that 33% overall is enough in Class 12. Each component needs its own 33%.
Limits of this estimate
This calculator checks academic examination marks using the general NIOS passing rules explained above. It does not support integrated vocational subjects, special assessment schemes, absent learners, “Result Later” or withheld results, grace or moderation marks, or any exception that applies to your case. It also does not pick a best five, assign a division, or predict admission or certificate eligibility.
Certification has extra conditions. You need to pass five subjects, including at least one but not more than two languages. At Senior Secondary level, a two-year gap from the year you passed Secondary is also required. Passing five entered subjects here does not by itself guarantee a certificate. The current NIOS prospectus and your official result decide.

Frequently asked questions
What is a NIOS Marks Calculator?
It is a tool that compares the marks you enter with the published NIOS passing rules. This one checks external examination marks only and gives an unofficial estimate for each subject.
What are the passing marks for NIOS Class 10?
For Secondary, you need at least 33% of the combined theory and practical marks in a subject, excluding TMA. Where a subject has no practical, that means 33% of theory marks.
What are the passing marks for NIOS Class 12?
For Senior Secondary, you need at least 33% in aggregate and at least 33% separately in theory and practical, where a subject has both. TMA marks are excluded from this check.
Does this calculator include TMA marks?
No. It does not add TMA to theory marks and does not assume any weighting. The passing estimate uses external examination marks only.
Does a result here mean I will get my certificate?
No. Certification also depends on passing five subjects with the right language combination and, for Senior Secondary, the two-year gap rule. Your official NIOS result is final.
Is my data stored or uploaded?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. The tool does not ask for personal details and does not save or send the marks you enter.
